JWP was proud to collaborate with The Hills Shire Council on a strategically significant infrastructure project, upgrading the intersection of Annangrove Road and Edwards Road at Box Hill. As a fast-developing area in Sydney’s northwest, the Box Hill Precinct and the adjoining Gables development is undergoing rapid transformation, and its transport infrastructure must evolve accordingly.

To meet the urgent needs of a growing population and increasing traffic volumes, JWP led the design and assisted in delivery of an interim single-lane roundabout. This solution addresses immediate safety and congestion challenges while setting the stage for a future signalised intersection.

Future-Proofing Through Design

At the core of our work was a dynamic design review and refinement process. As the surrounding area continued to evolve, our team ensured that the roundabout would remain relevant in a changing urban context. Flexibility was critical — our designs had to adapt to current development conditions while accounting for future land use and transport planning.

We worked closely with council and stakeholders to create a layout that integrates with future road upgrades,  existing road connections , and transport demands. This foresight means the eventual transition to a signalised intersection will be streamlined, cost-effective, and minimally disruptive.

Saving Costs Through Strategic Utility Coordination

One of the most impactful elements of this project was our utility coordination. Infrastructure upgrades often face cost overruns due to unforeseen utility conflicts. Anticipating this, we integrated utility adjustment designs with future upgrades in mind.

This forward-thinking approach means utilities won’t need to be relocated again when the next phase of the intersection is constructed. It’s a small detail with big benefits — saving The Hills Shire Council thousands of dollars and valuable time when that future work proceeds.

A Holistic Scope for a Complete Outcome

Our delivery scope for the project was comprehensive, covering:

  • Design review and refinement to accommodate shifting development timelines and land uses.
  • Utility coordination and adjustment designs aligned with the future signalised intersection.
  • Stormwater and road design, incorporating drainage and environmental considerations.
  • Landscape design to enhance the corridor’s visual and community appeal.
  • Road safety audit to ensure compliance with best-practice standards and optimise user safety.
  • Tender documentation to streamline contractor engagement.
  • Construction phase support, including design clarifications and on-the-ground guidance to contractors.

Every element was approached with both current functionality and future readiness in mind — a hallmark of our engineering philosophy.
